The 1949 Thomas Cup’s fifth and decisive point was scored by Penangite Ooi Teik Hock, securing the trophy for Malaya. His winning shot against Skaarup was the finest moment in Malayan badminton history. The 2000 supporters who filled Queen’s Hall in Preston to capacity were jubilant. Ooi Teik Hock rose to even greater heights by helping Malaya win the Thomas Cup repeatedly in 1952 and 1955.
Ong Poh Lim was famous for his backhand flick serve which was coined the "crocodile serve" after the crafty reptiles found in his native home, Sarawak. He was an integral part of Malaya’s three successive Thomas Cup victories in 1949, 1952 and 1955 and the only player to win all of his matches at these three Thomas Cups.
