A tribute to the Purulia Chhau masks of West Bengal. The artwork aims to pay a tribute to the endangered masked dance of Purulia. Chhau, a carrier of age-old tangible heritage and culture of Purulia is at a risk due to the ongoing pandemic. The artworks try to throw light on the idea of a mask, not as an object for protection but as an object of cultural representation. And in the process bringing attention to reviving the economic and social status of the mask-making community of Purulia (Sutradhar), India. Purulia Chhau is a form of masked dance performed by farmers in West Bengal to celebrate the harvest season. Chhau is held during the three-month spring festival of Chaitra Parva to thank the gods for a good harvest. Chhau dancers enact Indian mythological stories like the Ramayana, the Mahabharata focusing on the lesser-known subplots in these tales.
