Background: Prior to this design we had no sense of how many variations were possible within a 3x4 grid or how to find them. This seemed odd, considering how common grids are. The truth is: We didn’t have the tools to think about this kind of problem.
We think of grids as open systems, a set of rules that explore a small fraction of the possible variations by whim — as though on random walk through possibilities. A strange way to approach things —hoping to stumble on the right one.
